Certification Renewal

Certification Renewal All Medical Exercise Specialists (MES), Post Rehab Conditioning Specialists (PRCS), and Medical Exercise Program Directors (MEPD) must renew their AAHFRP/METI  certification(s) by completing the Medical Exercise Foundations (MXF) course. The Medical Exercise Foundations replaces the old Post Rehab Foundations workshop. The MXF consists of the two Medical Exercise Foundations lessons from our new Medical Exercise Specialist Training series. The MXF reviews the key foundations necessary to safely and effectively develop medical exercise/post rehab exercise programs for a wide range of clients.

The entire MXF course is available online so you can receive instant access to the materials and get started immediately and renew your certification. Each lesson contains a video (approximately 58 mins each), the lesson guide and the lesson quiz. Simply review the two videos and then complete the quizzes and submit your answers via email. Also, submit a copy of your MES, PRCS and/or MEPD certificate to complete the renewal process. If you did not obtain your MES or PRCS certification through the new MEST series, you are required to complete the Medical Exercise Foundations course.

If you obtained your Medical Exercise Specialist or Post Rehab Conditioning Specialist certification through the Medical Exercise Specialist Training (MEST) series using either the MES or PRCS tract, or you completed the Post Rehab Foundations workshop in the past, YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THE MEDICAL EXERCISE FOUNDATIONS workshop. You may renew using one of the two options noted below.

1. You may renew your certification by completing 10 hours of medical exercise/post rehab related coursework from any organization as long as the primary course instructor is a licensed medical professional (physical therapist, massage therapist, physician, chiropractor, nurse, etc). This allows you to select from a wide range of courses.  The licensure requirement for the primary instructor ensures quality instruction and delivery of the course content within the medical exercise training scope of practice. Utilizing techniques that breach the scope of practice may jeopardize your AAHFRP/METI certification.

2. You may renew your certification by completing 10 hours of observation in a sports medicine, physical therapy or chiropractic clinic setting. These hours must be completed under the supervision of a licensed medical professional. During these hours you will simply observe the facility’s staff members work with patients. Verification of the observation hours is satisfied by obtaining a letter, on the facility’s letterhead, signed by the supervising medical professional indicating the date(s) and number of hours completed.
